RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
